Savvy Creations existed long before earrings, and likely will continue to evolve in the future. It was always there as an artistic outlet, a way for me to honour my creativity regardless of the other passions I was pursuing. So, I thought it would be interesting to look back on the many ways Savvy Creations has changed throughout my childhood and teenage years and how it continues to inspire my work today.

Circa 2008

It all started with a children's novel called "Savvy" by Ingrid Law. In the story, Mibs, like any other 12 year old about to turn 13, was searching for her savvy, her abilities, her understanding. One of her brothers' savvy was creating electricity, another brothers' was causing hurricanes. Through a magical adventure, she realized that her savvy was the ability to communicate through ink, specifically tattoos and drawings.

Well, little 9 year old Madeleine adored the story. Since reading that book, and still to this day, I have loved the idea of sharing ones thoughts and communicating through art. Savvy represents the little girl who has always found creative ways of expressing herself.

Madeleine gets her first graffiti art book (it was a phase...) and the next thing you know, the Savvy tag was born.

Then the business woman in me took hold, and my Savvy tag became Savvy Creations, my own little business. Every Winter I would sell my graffiti style cards at a local Junior High Artisan's fair, with portions of the proceeds going to various charities.

Over time, I began experimenting with custom work, specifically clothing and shoes. My style was becoming a little more boho and abstract...

And at some point during these years, I started experimenting with clay. Finally! Not only could I create the images with ink, I could build them with my own two hands. So began many years of caricature clay figurines.

Now here we are, a decade later, with Savvy Creations earrings. I find it so interesting to see many aspects of my previous crafts in the earrings I make today.

The clay, a long-time hobby founded by my love for working with my hands.

The business, inspired by my little Junior High fair, held in the school gym.

The custom earrings, inspired by the joy I found in creating custom clothes for my friends.

And the name, my original graffiti tag, found on the back of every card I sold, and inspired by the little girl who communicated through art.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed putting together this little creative puzzle with me. I can't wait to see how my passions today will continue to inspire Savvy Creations in the future!
